About Bella Mafia: The Beauty of GH
I’ve learned a couple of things from my 19 years as an educator: 1.) Positive reinforcement works, and 2.) Negativity begets negativity.
As a longtime GH viewer, I’ve decided to apply both theories to my GH Blog. I’ve tired, as many of you have, of the negativity surrounding my favorite soap simply because a storyline didn’t go a certain way or because a certain couple isn’t a pairing. I get a headache when I see fans threatening to stop watching, or even worse, tweeting an actor to tell him they hope the show tanks. (In effect telling them they hope their means of supporting their families are taken away.) These behaviors shock me more than the comings and goings section of the latest spoilers!
Back in the day before all these avenues of communication between the viewer and actors/TPTB were available to us, fans had to tune in day in and day out to see what would happen. There were no spoilers or messageboards, no tweets from stars willing to give up family time to connect with their fans, and you know what was different?
Ratings. Yes, ratings.
People were committed to this genre of entertainment and appreciated it for what it was…fiction, playing out on our screens with, in GH’s case, really beautiful people.
These days, we hear about a leaked storyline and we take issue with the moral implications. Some get upset that a mobster they’ve loved and watched for 15 years actually orders a hit! Oh, the horror! We threaten the network execs with “blackouts” or commitments to stop watching. Some go as far as to send petitions to the sponsors. Let me just tell you where this gets us as soap fans…missing our flawed, but favorite soaps when they are cancelled.
I am thankful for the 60-minute daily escape from the real world that GH provides me. The characters I love and love to hate, do things, both bad and good, that I’d never do, and sometimes the crises they face are a bit far-fetched, but if I wanted everyday believeable crises, I’d watch CNN instead. I like an occasional hostage crisis, and I love believing that the hottest guy I’ve seen can play hero every time. And hey – if I want to show my appreciation to the police men, I give to the annual PBA Christmas toy drive, I don’t flip out because Port Charles cops are portrayed in a negative light!
Bella Mafia:The Beauty of GH will serve as a negativity-free zone for General Hospital Fans! Here, we will only discuss the beautiful things about our beloved “story.” Here, we’ll encourage fans to rave about what we are loving. Hopefully, positive reinforcement will prove itself true even with the writing.
I know that there are scenes EVERY DAY that we love and want to see more of. I know there are STORYLINES that make us rush home in time to watch as it unfolds, and make us BELIEVE in the ability of soaps to entertain and distract us from the realities of life.
This is the place for those things of beauty…
