Good morning, GHers.
Have you ever been surprised by something that wasn’t really a surprise?
I must admit that the news of Steve Burton leaving GH caused me to have more of a reaction than I originally anticipated. First and foremost, I completely understand that Steve moved his family from LA to TN in order to procure a better lifestyle for them, and I would not begrudge anyone that opportunity. Especially someone who spent the past 21 years working hard towards that goal. I wish Steve nothing but the very best in his future endeavors, and in his new life as a retiree, like me.
I guess what surprised me the most was the reaction, or lack thereof, of the complete and utter assholes (for complete lack of a better word) over at ABC. First of all, how did they not move heaven and earth – or at least the 6-8 meaningless new characters currently on GH, in order to give Steve what he wanted, knowing that he is part of one of the, if not THE, biggest storylines on canvas, AND truly, I don’t think there is a more popular or more influential daytime star in all of television!
Say what you will, Steve was able to get a draw of people and to garner support from those people that was unprecedented each and every time he attempted it. He was able to make a fortune from selling berry juice. He was able to make people believe in a rock band made up of a TV doctor, two mobsters and a cyber geek. He was able to launch his brother-in-law’s career as a fitness guru. And the one that says the most – he was able to finally get Becky Herbst sold out at her FCW event after the poor girl had little more than enough people to have a Tupperware party for the past few years.
Steve Burton, and the character of Jason Morgan, are not only immensely popular, they are hugely significant to the PC canvas, and central to almost every other PC family. Jason is more connected in PC than any other character. He is one half of the most powerful couple for GH. He has the most Twitter followers, for Pete’s Sake!
I am floored by the fact that the AIC didn’t do more to try and keep Steve wanting to commute just so that he could at least make it to the anniversary! More than that, I was disgusted, angered and beyond hurt as a not just a loyal fan, but as a fellow retiree by this official statement from ABC regarding Steve’s departure from the place he called home for the past 21 years:
In an interview with TV Guide, Steve Burton (Jason Morgan) confessed that he has chosen to exit General Hospital in the coming months. This is disappointing. but gives us an excuse to share a little secret. The next few months – leading up to GH’s monumental 50th anniversary on April 1, 2013 – are going to be completely insane (in the good way). Evidence #1: Duke Lavery shows up, yesterday, alive and well? What’s the deal with that- and when is he going to see Anna? We have a feeling no one saw that coming – and trust us, there’s more twists like that one on the horizon.
So – what are YOUR predictions for the coming months?
I have seen more substantial farewell messages posted in my church bulletin for the chick who served as pianist for a year and then went on to college. That was AWFUL – and DISRESPECTFUL, both to Steve, and to every loyal fan who has watched and enjoyed him for the past 21 years!
Sure, having Duke be the mystery man at the Swiss Clinic was a stunt, but guess what?
I care a whole lot more about the man who has played my favorite hit man-with-a-heart-of-gold for 21 years than I do for the man who played a mobster more than 21 years ago for about 3 years!
Why don’t the new AIC KNOW this?
Why aren’t they behaving like people who are trying to save a show by saving every viewer connection they’ve made over the years?
Since Carlivati and Valentini came to town, they have acted like terrorists in cahoots. They may not have gone after the water supply, but I would argue that going after our most beloved pairings and characters was just as dangerous the survival of the entire fictional town of Port Charles!
They have managed to make us all sick, one by one, and fanbase by fanbase. At this rate, they will have wiped out the entire town of PC right off the daytime map!
It seems there is a solution. A way to end the madness. THE ANTIDOTE, so to speak would be for the “authorities” over at GH to step in and send in their best guys to negotiate. It may be too late to stop the damage already done, but if there is any chance at all that we haven’t seen the last of our favorite hero (and hell to the no, I am not talking about McBain!), then perhaps PC can be saved! It wouldn’t be the last time an actor who said goodbye was lured back!
THE ANTIDOTE must also include a plan to stop any other threats to life as we know it in PC by sacrificing the newbies for the vets we care about most, instead of the other way around. Give me Quartermaines, Cassadines, Spencers, Corinthos, Scorpios ANY DAY over Scullies and 50 Shades of Falconeris.
For now, until the damage is contained or REMOVED (crossing fingers), I have chosen to QUARANTINE myself from GH as a precaution. RC and FV have given Monkey Virus a whole new meaning with the crap they have infected my beloved soap of almost 40 years. As much as I love GH, I am not exposing myself to that!
As for Steve, if I could issue a statement of my own, I would say:
“Thanks for the many years of hard work and dedication you put in at GH for our benefit and pure enjoyment. Your efforts were much appreciated and sincerely respected by your fans. Thanks for the sheer MAGIC you delivered onscreen opposite Kelly Monaco for the past eight years, give or take a year or two. 🙂 Those efforts inspired a creativity in your fans that I’ve never seen for any other character, couple or soap. Award-worthy videos and graphic art were created, romantic stories and novellas were written, and blogs and sites brought people together in friendships that would never have existed, if not for the immense love the fans have for JaSam. There really aren’t words that could ever express the deep and earnest gratitude we all feel towards you for your part in making it all happen. JaSam changed our GH experience, yes. But more than that, it often changed our lives. That is pretty incredible, and you should be proud that through your work, you had a hand in that. You and your presence shall be missed every single day that GH remains on the air. I have a sad and dreadful feeling though, that we shall all be put out of that misery sooner, rather than later. Godspeed, Steve! Thanks for the memories, and thanks for the MAGIC!”
I pray that none of you are taking this lying down. I hope you are bitching like never before! And for those of you with Nielsen boxes – your voice carry the loudest and the furthest! Use them!
I need to go watch some Classic JaSam – which was anytime before the Monkey Virus that originated in Llanview came to Port Charles!
