Focusing On The Things That Keep Us Watching

Did I Miss Something?

Good morning, GHers.

It’s been a little hectic around here since my kids go back to school on Thursday, so exhaustion won out last night before I could finish my post.

I watched Monday’s episode of GH, and found myself asking over and over, “Did I Miss Something?” So many things seemed so off to me, and while we’ve talked about having to “suspend our belief” quite often as a fan of soaps, some things are  just a product of lazy writing.

For instance, every time I hear someone talk about the fact that Joss was taken from her room while her mother was down the hall, I have to ask, “Did I Miss Something?” Let me tell you something. A few years ago, after my first surgery, our neighbors reported a rash of break-ins, where simple valuables were taken, such as wallets and jewelry. I was terrified at the thought that someone might break in while I was home alone and unable to move. My husband got the security company at our house to install a full security system THE VERY NEXT DAY. Now GH is trying to convince me that the Jacks house, where the daughter of a mega-millionaire and the god-daughter of a mob hitman was the victim of a serial killer’s antics when Franco came into the house and tagged her room while she was in her crib, and where another serial killer (albeit her uncle, Jerry) came in and pulled her out of her room to sit with her in the family living room, didn’t get a top-of-the-line security system that tracks and records every movement? Come on.

When John came to town, he was hell-bent on bringing Sonny down. Now he’s gulping down drinks with Sonny at his restaurant? “Did I Miss Something?” I get that they share a common interest in McBain’s sister, but I just don’t see that McBain would be discussing cases with Sonny, simply on the principle that even though he didn’t kill Theresa, he is still a mobster! *sigh*

For the same reason, I had the same reaction Spinelli did to hearing that McBain and Jason were working together to figure out what really happened to Alexis and Joss. Moments before those two went on their boat ride to Spoon Island, they could barely stand to breathe the same air! “Did I Miss Something?” While I would never begrudge Mr. Easton a job, as he is a fairly new dad, I just need the writers to stop being so blatant in making John the resident superhero. That title belongs to Jason. Make him a really good cop – that’s something PC has been lacking for years! Just leave the cape to Mr. Morgan.

I love my therapist. In fact, there are days when I have to stop and count the hours to when I will be able to step into her office and unload all the things I don’t want to unload on my family. If I ever went in for a session and she flipped out on me the way the Ewan did on Kate before basically throwing her out of his office, I would have a nervous breakdown on the spot! Watching Ewan acting as though he were the one with D.I.D. with the still fragile Kate had me asking “Did I Miss Something?” all over again. Where did Dr. Keenan get his license? Could he not see what his meltdown was doing to his patient? I just don’t get this storyline at all. Then watching Kate take on a whole new personality – as Ewan’s wanna-be therapist was just weird! “Dr. Keenean, Ewan – Whatever you say to me will not leave this room?” Really??? And don’t even get me started on the fact that Dr. Keenan leaves his confidential patient files out in plain sight on a desktop filing system! I am more careful about my bank statements! Give me a break!

I may be a little resentful that Lante are getting the story that Jason and Sam were about to embark upon just as Ron Carlivati came seeping into Port Charles like a toxic chemical compound, but “Did I Miss Something?” Just a couple of (PC) days ago, Lulu was this career-oriented partner in a business endeavor with Johnny. Just a couple of (PC) days ago, nothing mattered to Lulu but The Haunted Star, and she was pissed whenever her husband wanted to play house. Now suddenly, it’s as if her floating club-casino sank out in the harbor, and she suddenly doesn’t even seem to care if it will make enough money to break even for the month. What the heck?

You guys all know I live in Jersey, just on the other side of the River from NYC. You guys must have also noticed that we are just a couple of weeks away from having to look back on the September 11 tragedy at the hands of terrorists. We will all look back with terrible sadness and respect for those who lost their lives. Unless we are watching GH, who apparently is going into September and towards this terrible anniversary with a storyline about terrorism. “Did I Miss Something?” Have things changed so much in the daytime genre that writers now think a terrorism storyline set in a fictional town in NEW YORK during the month when NEW YORK is most sensitive is ENTERTAINMENT for their mostly female audience? This is just wrong! I don’t care what the hell is in those vials! It could be spoiled milk for all I care! The word terrorism and the mass destruction of innocent lives it represents is NOT something I want to, or will, watch. Not only will I not watch, I have been calling in, emailing, and yesterday sat down and wrote a scathing letter to TPTB to let them know that if THIS is their new regime’s idea for getting viewers tuned in, GH is in deeper trouble than I ever imagined!

“Did I Miss Something?”

YES! As did we all, if we were expecting to see a new and improved GH, full of the stories and characters we have come to love over the past 49.5 years! YES, we missed something if you were hoping for romance and adventure and good, old-fashioned Love In The Afternoon.

At this rate, we will be missing our beloved General Hospital when it is replaced with some stupid “fluff” show that may be awful and axed in less than six months, but at least they won’t be planning a terrorist attack on our sensibilities.

In honor of NYC’s campaign against terror, I invite all of you to take a stand against this grossly negligent storyline. In NYC, we are all urged: “If You See Something, Say Something.”

You all SEE where this irresponsible and hurtful s/l is going. SAY SOMETHING!

This is not the way to honor the month of September.

Most sincerely,

  1. Yes,Angie!!Your words are right on!!”Did we miss something?” It was so odd to see McBain and Sonny acting like drinking buddies.McBain always has to be the hero especially where Sam is concerned. He’s going to look into what happened to Sam’s mom and Joss!!!He is a cop but not in Port charles—yet!!That is coming.I never thought about the terrorism story and the month

    Hey Angelique,

I have not seen Monday’s epi of GH but from your blog seems like I MISSED NOTHING!!!! I will def be writing TPTB i have just been very busy with work. These writers are just the worst & they don’t seem to be getting any better or at least trying to! I don’t get the excited feeling of rushing home to watch Gh again and i don’t think it would happen for a while again. i just hope tptb listen to our comments.

have a good day fellow jasammers.

  4. I think we all missed something, cause the crap we are getting right now shows it…At this point I do believe these writers are trying to get GH canned, why else would we have so many stories that make no sense…it is as if they hired these clowns and told them to do what they want, and that is exactly what they are doing, what they want…at least some people are happy.

Thank You Angie! One thing I think we did not miss is RC is an idiot!
He loves John McBain that’s for sure. The man has to be Sam’s hero no matter how stupid the writing. Sonny’s new buddie, Sam’s new man, PC’s new hero..yep..thats McBain. I’m pretty sure he’s going to save PC, get the woman, find the baby, take down Heather, nail Todd, throw Johnnie in jail and kill Jerry all in one week.

All I can say .. If the writers are trying to show disrespect for the nation and the rest of the world for that matter.. then bravo mission accomplished with this terrorist s/l. ABC should be ashamed of what they are going to put on air in September. Still not watching and this just gives me one more reason to continue not to watch!
    Missing the GH I loved!!

    Dear Angelique,

I just sent the following email to Ms. Dummer. Please feel free to have others send emails, and reference this one. I don’t know if any of those people have the ability to care about the fanbase anymore, but this is my sincere effort at getting them to take their heads out of their asses.

    Dear Ms. Dummer,

I am writing to you because I can’t write to Mr. Valentini, or Mr. Carlivati. They’ve both made it all but impossible to share anything with them they don’t want to hear.

I am writing about the latest storyline. It is a terrorist plot. Your people are writing a storyline about a terrorist plot to take place in a New York city (albeit a fictionalized city) in the month of September. Can we say, “bad timing”?

It has become patently clear that neither Mrs. Valentini nor Carlivati care what the actual fanbase thinks (unless it is good), and the storytelling has clearly reflected that mentality, but Ms. Dummer, this is taking that sentiment way too far. There is no way you wouldn’t be familiar with just how sensitive we New Yorkers’ are during the month of September. Is your organization, by approving this storyline, at this time, suggesting we just “get over ourselves”? Because that would be woefully shortsighted of you.

Please re-think what you are doing. Please do not subject people who’ve already been through so much, to even fictional loss at such a time.

Please, please, tell me (demonstrate) you are better people than this timing might suggest.

    • I hope 1 someone read this and understand why this story is a bad idea,I am not sure why it took many angry fans for these idiots to see how bad their idea is,why would they pick Sept…makes me wonder are you right, are they saying get over it…I hope all our calls and emails open their eyes before they hurt more people for no reason, other than them being idiots.

As a New Yorker and and a wainging GH fan, thank you for acknowledging GH’s terrible disregard to a very sensitive subject. I am not surprised by GH’s lack of forethought regarding their storylines, it seems to be running rampant with these writers.
Being a longtime GH watchers (not so much lately thought) there always seems to be a disconnect between characters and storylines. YOU didn’t miss anything, TPTB just figure the viewers are too stupid to notice the things you pointed out.
