AS TENSIONS RUN HIGH…
What a day, GHers, what a day!
Tensions were truly flying high within Port Charles…and out of Port Charles as well.
Let’s see if we can’t exchange some ideas on everything that’s happened…without tensions flying high.
Certainly that seemed an impossible feat on Twitter or Facebook today.
Let’s begin with…who else, but The Balkan. Thankfully, the Balkan seemed to be flying solo on this busy Tuesday afternoon…just making rounds at what he figures are the important “hot Spots” around town – all the places where he plans to do a little damage. The Balkan stopped off at Dante’s first, and managed to sideswipe Lulu right off the freeway towards bliss Lulu always thought she was zooming towards with Dante. I would bet that I am not the only one who knew exactly how Lulu felt as she listened to someone telling her about a person she thought she knew, but realized she didn’t know him at all. Haven’t we all had a relationship like that at least once in our lives? I felt for Lulu, and I realized that balance can be a really good thing, because as the writers have dialed back on the Lante pairing a little bit, it has helped me to not wanna change the channel every time they are on. Tensions were flying high even at those moments when Dante first came home and Lulu was struggling to keep it together. That scene reminded me of how great a soapy storyline can be. I love that Dante looked guilty even before Lulu confronted him with the whole thing, and I love that nothing he said could really change her mind in the heat of the moment. While I’m sure Lante fans would want them to work this out right away, what Dante did requires at least a struggle on their way back to what they had in 2010 B.B. (Before Brenda) Overall I think the scenes created angst and interest for a couple who hasn’t had much of a story lately, and in the end, that should always be good.
Tensions always fly high when Theo Hoffman and Sonny face off, which is why it was so appropriate that The Balkan was next off to use up his meal perks at Sonny’s restaurant, and was probably sampling Laura’s Standing Sun red when Sonny comes to try and remind Mr. Hoffman who’s boss. Theo is so good that Sonny can’t even tell just how in control of this game the attorney is. He is going to destroy Brenda, her case, and her life, and he’s going to do it with the cooperative help of Brenda and her cronies. That’s what you call poetic justice, and I have a hunch that The Balkan wants to make his revenge as poetic as possible, or he’d have snapped Brenda’s neck the first chance he got.
Tensions were flying high as Abby chose to lie “for Michael’s own good” and tell him that she really is a hooker, and as much as Michael battled to get Abby to take it back and admit the truth, she wouldn’t back down. This only made Michael angry and on a mission to blame someone for his disappointment and heartbreak. I kinda knew just the person who would serve that person, and so did Michael: Mommy Dearest.
Tensions at the PH had already been flying pretty darned high, as Carly was trying to put all the blame on Sam for Michael falling for Abby, and all the blame on Jason for not chasing Abby off. However, tensions became downright explosive when Michael walked in and Carly couldn’t even disguise how much she was gloating over Abby’s arrest. Does anyone remember when the cute Drew Garrett was fired, and Chad seemed to drop out of the sky and into a huge storyline? Do you also remember just how upset many of us were? I do. And yet, I cannot imagine how nay of this coming of age stuff could have happened without Chad Duell in this role! What an outstanding job he is doing with every scene they’re giving him! When Michael is angry, I am angry for him. When Michael is heartbroken, I get a lump in my throat. And when Michael was shouting at his mother about Carly not knowing him, or barely even seeing him, I was incensed on his behalf. Michael was right. Yet, he was also right to go find Carly and calmly tell her what was really bothering him. She is his mother, ands she deserves his forgiveness and understanding. And in both scenes, Chad made me feel each of those things separately, *applause* I will say this, God help Carly should she break that promise she made to Michael about staying out of whatever happens with Abby.
Once again, Jason and Sam were forced into another situation where not only did tensions run high, but they had to help someone else’s kid deal with their issues. Jason and Sam didn’t let Carly back them down, sprung into action, got things straightened out, and were ever reminded of a lesson Jason learned the hardest way possible – to never make decision for someone else’s own good. I love how Sam and Jason dealt with Abby. Sam being Abby’s friends was the one to ask the honest questions, like “Are you crazy/”, while Jason was left to give the gentle suggestions. Classic good cop, bad cop strategy, and no one does it better than Jason and Sam!
I see how Sam reassured Jason about doing his best out of love for Michael, and I see how it soothes him. Sure, Michael’s life hasn’t been ideal, but Carly and Sonny made a lot of decisions that Jason never would have. I think it’s important for Jason to know that just like with never making anyone’s decisions for them, there are lots of mistakes you can learn from and do better with. If Jason and Sam are going to ever be parents to a child of their own, the most important thing will be to remember that when you know better, you do better. Hopefully, with everyone finally out of the penthouse, maybe we can get a couple of scenes where sexual tensions fly high???
A girl can dream, can’t she?
Finally, friends, tensions were flying very high about the confirmation that Rebecca Herbst was let go from General Hospital. *sigh*
For those of you who read my column often, you’ll know that the character of Liz Webber is my favorite character to hate. That’s a good thing! Every show needs characters to hate (not actors).
However, I am always hurt and angered by those of you who read only what you want, and then react by leaving me hateful messages and comments (I’m sorry there is no other word.) that you hope General Hospital gets canceled.
First of all, since starting this blog, I have never once approved a message that was insulting to an actor/actress, the writers, or any other real person. That will never change. If you want to be negative or hateful, find another place to post.
Secondly, I really don’t understand how anyone could intelligently blame Kelly or Steve for a decision made (long ago) by GH’s Headwriter, and other execs.
I say long ago because I think that Liz’s character ran out of story long before any of the news broke. I don’t think it had anything to do with Kelly or Steve, like I don’t think it had anything to do with Jason and Sam. Will they use it as a plot point to move stories forward? Most likely.. But Jason and Sam have been back together since August 2009. That didn’t prompt Ms. Herbst being let go. They tried a few things with her character. Some worked, and some didn’t. But whether TPTB did or didn’t think they worked has nothing to do with Steve or Kelly. GET REAL!
I am saddened that people would react so pettily and make this undoubtedly sad time for Becky about a fanbase war that really should have ended long ago, and then take it to a whole new level by wishing an entire show canceled. When people say these things, are they thinking about the dozens of people who would be without a job? How many families would be affected? How an American staple of our culture would be closer to being a thing of the past?
People, these things happen all the time. Anyone remember Philip Spaulding being killed off of GL? Or Maureen Bauer? What about Marlena on Days? John Abbott, Cassie Newman, Brad Carlton, or Chance Chancellor on Y&R? And, hey – doesn’t anyone remember Alan and Emily Quartermaine, Justus Ward, Georgie Jones? The list goes on and on. It’s the one thing that will never change on soaps…storylines dictate your future with the show. Let’s not blame people who had nothing to do with the decision-making!
I really do wish Rebecca Herbst well. She obviously has all of the things that make one most happy – a beautiful family and lots of supportive friends. I am sure she has great things ahead. I’d bet that the one thing that could make that journey a little easier for her would be positive support and words from her fans.
Just a thought…
